Types Of Mold

When it comes to discussion about molds, we first need to find out what it is. IT is not a type of animal or plant, but fungi just like yeast and mushrooms are. Molds also have some medical use, such as penicillin which form one of the biggest and most potent classes of antibiotics. It can also be harmful to humans, causing many diseases. Mold variants in its forms, colors, shapes and sizes. Following are some common types of molds found in our households, during routine mold inspections.

Here are a few types of mold commonly found in homes

  1. Alternaria

Mostly found outdoors, Alternaria also grows in areas where there is a lot of moisture inside the house such as in bathrooms or areas where pipe is leaking. It can also be found in areas where water is present or flooded. It can spread easily to one place in the house to another. It is harmful for human health as it gets in the airways and causes asthma and allergies.

  1. Aspergillus

It is mostly found inside the house rather outside and causes asthma, allergy and hypersensitivity. After mold inspections, it has been found out that it also leads to lung inflammation which gives birth to a lot of respiratory diseases.

  1. Acremonium

It is a type of mold which is toxigenic. Over the time it can convert itself to more harmful form. It originates as a smaller mild and over the time becomes more toxic. It is pink, white or grey in its color. Not only it is found near humidifiers but also near sealants and cooling pipes. It is dangerous for humans since it can lead to disease of bone marrow and other organs. Since it causes brain function impairment, it is also cancer causing.

  1. Botrytis

Botrytis can be commonly found in areas which are lot humid such as near leaky pipes and in your baths. It can cause asthma or other respiratory problems when inhaled.

  1. Chaetomium

It can be found in window frames and carpets containing water. It has a weird odour and causes infections of nails and skin. It is more dangerous for immunocompromised patients. You need to repair areas of water damage in your house to make sure it doesn’t grow back again.

Cladosporium; mostly found indoors, this type can also grow in cold climates as well as warm. It also grows on various surfaces such as carpets, wooden areas, cupboards etc and causes allergic reactions.

  1. Fusarium

Fusarium just like cladosporium also grows in both warm and cold climates. And can be found on carpets or other clothing which stays moist. It can lead to respiratory and allergic problems.

  1. Penicillium

Penicillium looks like a blue or greenish coloured mold, causes chronic sinus infections and lung inflammation. IT is found majorly in damp carpets, wallpapers, beddings etc. Just like other molds, it can also be contagious and spreads easily from and infected piece of cloth. is often found growing on materials that have been damaged by water, including carpeting,

  1. Stachybotrys Chartarum

It looks more like a slimy and black mold type. It produces compounds called mycotoxins which are very toxic for our breathing system. It has musty smell which can be recognized easily in damp areas and around popes that leak.

  1. Trichoderma

It can mostly be found on damp places such as floors or carpets. It also produces toxins and mold inspections show that it can cause health and respiratory problems and allergic reactions.

  1. Ulocladium

Ulocladium it mostly is found in areas which have a lot of water, mostly due to flooding or wet walls.
